Learning from Chinese Vernacular is a catalogue of spatial conditions shaped by local customs, rituals, materials, and everyday practices: a symbol used in the worship of a local deity, a wall standing stubbornly in front of a village temple, or a 60-centimeter gap left between two neighboring houses……
Formed gradually through use, these conditions are adapted by residents rather than authored by a single designer. They are specific to their places and communities—practical, improvised, inherited, and continually modified.
Through materials collected on site, collages, interpretive diagrams, and interviews with residents, the archive reveals how objects, spaces, rituals, and everyday practices embody different ways of knowing.
Part field guide, part visual investigation, the zine approaches the vernacular as a form of intelligence—messy, practical, social, and often unexpectedly inventive.
